Porcincola is a genus of Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic bacteria in the family Lachnospiraceae. The genus was described from the pig intestine and currently contains one validly published species, Porcincola intestinalis.[1]
Taxonomy
The genus name Porcincola is derived from Latin porcus, meaning "pig", and incola, meaning "inhabitant" or "dweller".[2] The type species is Porcincola intestinalis.[1]
Description
The type species, P. intestinalis, consists of coccobacilli that stain Gram-positive, are non-motile, and grow only under strictly anaerobic conditions.[2] Cells may occur in pairs and can form chains up to approximately 10 μm in length.[2]
Ecology
Porcincola was originally described from the intestinal tract of pigs. The type species, P. intestinalis, was isolated from the feces of an Aachen minipig in Germany.[2]
Although first described from pigs, Porcincola has also been reported in rumen microbiome studies. A longitudinal metagenomic study of calves from birth to approximately 800 days of age identified Porcincola among early-life rumen microbial lineages discussed as part of a persistent auxiliary rumen microbiome.[3] In a 2026 in vitro dairy cow rumen fermentation study, Porcincola was reported as one of the core and most abundant genera in the bovine rumen dataset.[4]
