History[edit]

Founding of the team[edit]

The Juhannuslehto hockey rink was opened in February 1949, enabling hockey in Pori.[1] Several sports clubs in Pori took over hockey, and the popularity of hockey quickly rose. [2] In the 1950s, Porin Kärpät established its place in the Suomen sarja. In the period 1956–1957, it was close to promotion to the SM-sarja, but eventually fell out of the Finnish Championships due to a worse goal difference. [3] The Porin Palloilijat players had a slightly similar situation in their own main sport, football; it had ascended to the Suomensarja (note that Suomensarja is different than Suomen sarja) in 1945, dropped from there to the Maakuntasarja in 1951, and rose again to the Suomensarja in 1959. [4] The operational and financial resources of PoPa and Kärpät's number one teams did not seem to be high enough for the highest league level. Discussions on the merging of the clubs were started by Erik Wallin, President of the PoPa, and Jalo Ahlsten of Kärpät, who worked for the city of Pori and had adjoining offices in the town hall. The unification negotiations were aided by the fact that the clubs had different number one species and that they had a common history. Officially, this was done by the Palloilijat changing their name to Pori Karhut in October 1960 and the Kärpät players joining Karhut. [5]
