The city of Pori has a really long history in sports. The oldest sports club in Finland, Segelföreningen i Björneborg, is based in Pori.[1] The city of Pori has won five Finnish championships in men's ice hockey, three of them being won by Porin Ässät.[2] FC Jazz has won two Finnish championships in association football.[3][4] Most of the sports in Pori are played in the Isomäki district of Pori, also known as the Pori sporting centre.

Ice hockey in Pori[edit]

There are currently two ice hockey teams that play in any of the top-three men's leagues in Finland (Liiga, Mestis, Suomi-sarja). Porin Ässät plays in the top-tier league of Finland, Liiga, while Karhu HT plays in the third-tier, Suomi-sarja. There have been two other teams, Porin Karhut and RU-38, that have played in the top-tier. Ässät has won three finnish championships while both Karhut and RU-38 have won one each.[2][5][6] In total the city of Pori has been able to win 11 medals in ice hockey. Both Ässät and Karhu HT play in the Isomäki Areena. Ässät's junior teams use the Astora Areena.

Ässät had a women's team in the top-tier women's league, Naisten SM-sarja, from 1982 to 1995.[7] Sari Fisk, who is widely considered to be the best Finnish female hockey player, is from Pori and played for Ässät.

The 1976 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships were partly played in Pori.

Football in Pori[edit]

There are currently two football teams that play in any of the top-three men's leagues in Finland. Musan Salama (MuSa) and FC Jazz currently play in the third-tier league of Finland, Kakkonen. FC Jazz has won the Finnish championship two times, in 1993 and 1996.[3][4] Both teams play in the Pori Stadium. FC Jazz got relegated from Veikkausliiga in 2004.[8]

Porin Ässät had a football team that played two seasons in the Finnish top-tier league. After 1969, Ässät played in lower leagues until being disestablished in 1981.[8] Ässät won a U19 Finnish championship in 1970.[9] Ässät's predecessor, RU-38 also played in the top-tier league. The greatest acheivement of RU-38 in football was a silver medal in 1959. Porin Karhut had a football team from 1960 to 1968. Karhut only played in lower leagues but played one season as Ässät's secondary team.[8]

Pori has a women's team called NiceFutis that last played in 2020 in the Naisten Kolmonen, the fourth-tier league of Finland.

Floorball in Pori[edit]

There is only one team that currently plays in any of the top-three men's leagues of Finland in floorball. FBT Karhut plays in the Miesten Divari, the second-tier league of Finland. Karhut got relegated to Miesten Divari for the 2022–23 season. Karhut has played in the F-liiga but hasn't won a single championship. FBT Karhut plays in the Porin urheilutalo.

SBS Pori has played in the top-league but hasnt won any championships. SBS Pori currently plays in the 3. divisioona.

American football in Pori[edit]

There is currently one team in any of the top-three American football leagues of Finland. Pori Bears play in the second-tier American football league, 1. divisioona. Pori Bears have played in the top-tier league, Vaahteraliiga, three times (1982, 1987–88, 2003–2004). Bears have won the 2nd league two times (1986 and 2002)

Segelföreningen i Björneborg[edit]

Segelföreningen i Björneborg (BSF), being established in 1856, is the oldest sports club in Finland. BSF is a yacht club. BSF's port is located in Mäntyluoto, Pori in the Kallo area.[1] BSF was established by Gustaf Sohlström. BSF hosted the 2006 and the 2018 Snipe European Championships.[10][11]
