"Portals" is a song by South African rapper Zulo, released as the lead single from his upcoming EP, Talk to Me Naace (2022). The song signifies Zulo's return to contemporary hip-hop, following his genre-bending EP, Don’t Take Me for a P! (2019), as well as the debut single credited under his new stage name, after the announcement that he would be abandoning his 14-year alias Lil Trix in 2020.[1] To promote the song, the track was accompanied by a music video directed by Ntando Butho, coinciding the single's release.[2]

Background[edit]

Inspired by 80’s rock ‘n roll imagery, the single’s cover art depicts ZULO’s mascot Tricky, the Bunny peeking out of the eye socket of a skull with a purple portal in its mouth, designed by Zayaanah Albertyn, who also designed the artwork for Don’t Take Me for a P!.

Recording[edit]

"Portals" marks ZULO’s return to contemporary hip-hop, following his 2019 genre-bending EP Don’t Take Me for a P!, as well as the debut single credited under his new stage name ZULO, after the announcement that he would be abandoning his 14-year alias Lil Trix in 2020. The song serves as the lead single for ZULO’s upcoming third EP Talk to Me Naace. In its lyrics, ZULO transitions to his current brand from his former stage name over a thumping beat, assuring listeners that he might appear as a new artist, but the journey behind him surely proves that he has come a long way, being in the industry for over 10 years.

Composition and lyrics[edit]

According to TexxAndTheCity, the song is primarily produced by ZULO, readopting his signature electro-influenced sound, sampling “Cameroon” by the legendary Miriam Makeba, with additional production provided by Miglow and additional 808 programming by MV Majestic. Background vocals are provided by frequent collaborator ByLwansta, as well as a triumphant outro performed by PATFROMTHESLUMS, who ZULO previously collaborated with on “Stranger”, appearing on his previous EP. The outro’s live guitar is performed by ItsDumi.

Marketing[edit]

The single was accompanied by an Instagram filter allowing users to wear a 3D model of ZULO’s cartoon bunny mascot Tricky, the Bunny with blinking mechanics. It was released a week before the single’s release on May 28, 2021.

Music video[edit]

The song's official music video coincided with the single's release on June 4, 2021, and was directed by Ntando Butho. It was shot at N12 Spin City in Westonaria, Johannesburg, and various locations in Johannesburg south. MC Zane Gulston, who is credited as "The General", and ByLwansta, who provides adlibs on the song, appear in the music video, as well as the song's mastering engineer, singer and producer Kimosabe. The video also includes several cameos from Johhanesburg south-based rappers, singers and DJ, including Kevi Kev, SmangaOG, BASMNT, Nbabezimnandi, E.Li, D.O.X and Philaboi K.
