Zunaid Lombard (born 9 September 1994), known professionally as Zulo (stylized as ZULO), is a South African rapper, songwriter and record producer.[1][2] Known for being vastly hands-on, Zulo’s style is considered very experimental, typically making using of synthesizers and a fusion of boom bap, modern trap and kwaito, with his lyrical content being predominantly personal and uplifting, using South African coloured slang, humour and popular culture.[3] Zulo gained moderate recognition in 2012 after signing to the independent record label Blayze Entertainment, and released his single "Red, Black & White" under the alias Lil Trix.[2] Zulo was later named one of the top 7 Hype Magazine freshmen in 2017.[4]
Zulo gained further recognition in 2021 after changing his stage name, having appeared on "Okay, Fine" by frequent collaborator ByLwansta.[5][6] Zulo released his single "Portals" in June 2021, which is expected to appear on his upcoming extended play Talk to Me Naace (2022).[7]
Early life[edit]
Born and raised in Johannesburg South, South Africa, Lombard established an interest in the arts at an early age, experimenting in various creative departments including filmmaking, video game development, graphic design, poetry and music.[2][7][8] At age 11, Lombard began recording music with his older cousin Iezy, dubbing themselves as Illuzion, and eventually started recording solo music under the alias Lil Trix, using a Nintendo Wii microphone.[2] Using an old Casio kids keyboard his younger sister nearly got rid of, Lombard began producing music and learned to direct and edit his own music videos.[2] Lombard would go on to record eight mixtapes in high school, all in which he entirely produced and mixed, and were sold solely to his peers.[2][8] Lombard would later design his own website and cover arts, which are frequently centered around his anthropomorphic cartoon bunny mascot "Tricky", often depicted in different poses.[2]
Career[edit]
2011–2013: Blayze Entertainment and Colour Me Bad[edit]
Zulo made his radio debut in 2011, after appearing on the YFM Hot 99 hip-hop chart with his friend for their song "How Many MC's".[4] Their song managed to chart at number 1 for three consecutive weeks.[2] The duo also appeared together on the Power Nights chart on 5FM in 2012, after their second song "Trouble", charted at number 1.[2] In November 2011, Blayze signed Zulo onto his independent record label Blayze Entertainment, where Zulo released his mixtape Colour Me Bad on March 29, 2013, with notable guest appearances from Blayze, Gigi LaMayne, Fameboy Hydro, ByLwansta and Mariechan of the group, Jamali.[9]
2014–2016: Singles[edit]
In 2014, Zulo performed alongside Slikour, one of the founding members of the South African hip-hop group Skwatta Kamp, on LiveAmp and SkyRoomLive on SABC 1.[2][10] IN late 2014, Zulo starred in and released a short film in collaboration with the streetwear clothing brand The Uniconz.[11]
In September 2015, Zulo signed with African Star Communications for public relations and released his debut music video for his single "Hard", which made its premiere on Channel O.[2][12] Zulo released five singles between 2015 and 2016 including "Rise of the Jedi", "Everyday", "Hard", "Wonderful", which featured Rouge, Slikour and season 8 runner-up on Idols Melissa Allison, and "Baddie", leading up to his debut EP, Zulo.[13]
2017–2019: Zulo and Don't Take Me for a P![edit]
Zulo was named one of the top 7 freshmen by Hype Magazine in 2017, emphasizing the rapper's musical approach as "a rare discovery to find one who is so calculated with the art.".[4] Zulo released his now eponymous debut EP shortly after, Zulo, on February 16, 2017, featuring notable guest appearances from fellow Hype Magazine freshman, ByLwansta, as well as award-winning rapper Solo Ntsizwa Ka Mthimkhulu.[14] Zulo appeared on Morning Live on SABC 2 to promote the EP.[15] Zulo was also recognized as one of the "25 Up-And-Coming South African Rappers Under 25 You Need To Stop Sleeping On" by OkayAfrica in June 2017.[16]
Don't Take Me for a P!, Zulo's second EP, was on November 22, 2019, which saw a complete departure from Zulo's signature sound and was compromised of almost entirely singing, highlighting his journey through an emotional break-up.[3]
2020-present: Talk to Me Naace and name change[edit]
In 2020, Zulo announced that he would be abandoning the stage name Lil Trix in favour of his alias, and title of his debut EP, Zulo, which uses the first two letters of his first name and last name.[7] Zulo was featured alongside Solo Ntsizwa Ka Mthimkhulu on "Okay, Fine" by ByLwansta, appearing on, Spijonget, the rapper's debut album, on February 28, 2020. Zulo announced that he would be releasing his third EP in 2021, Talk to Me Naace, and revealed a rock ‘n roll inspired logo, designed by Zulo himself, and his new look on December 12, 2020.[17][1] On June 4, 2021, Zulo released the lead single for the EP, "Portals".[18] The second single, "Just Vaarbs", was released on July 30, 2021.[19] The EP is expected to be released in April 2022.[20]
