Postindustrial Media covers the American Rust Belt, Appalachia, and other communities around the world where industries like manufacturing and mining once provided job security for millions, though they no longer do.

Postindustrial publishes a quarterly print magazine, as well as daily digital editions, podcasts, and more.

Concept and orientation[edit]

The outlet’s use of “Postindustrial” is a stylized version of the two words, referring to regions that previously relied on manufacturing, mining, and agriculture as a base on which those communities and regions were built.

Postindustrial Media started by carrying news stories from a 13-state region of the United States, the Rust Belt, and Appalachia, but now produces news stories about post-industrial regions throughout the United States and around the world.

History[edit]

Founding[edit]

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Postindustrial Media was founded in 2018. One of the company’s founders is American conflict journalist and author, Carmen Gentile, who also serves as editor-at-large. Kimberly Palmiero is CEO & editor-in-chief.[1]

Origins[edit]

Gentile, upon returning to his hometown area of New Kensington, Pa., wanted to start an independent media outlet[2] that went beyond stereotypes of people in the region.

Content[edit]

Postindustrial produces original journalism, collaborates with, and curates stories from other news outlets.[3][4] In December 2021, it released the podcast Extremely American[5][6] about the rise of the militia movement[7][8] in the United States; Boise State Public Radio was a sponsor.[9]

The company also produces podcasts,[10] including the Postindustrial Podcast. Past guests on the Postindustrial Podcast include historian Timothy Snyder and politician John Fetterman.
