Praveen Sparsh (born 31 May 1992) is an Indian mridangam artist, multi-percussionist, and music producer.

Early life and musical training

Praveen Sparsh was born as K. Praveen Kumar to Kishen Kumar and Kumutha K. on 31 May 1992 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His maternal grandfather was the renowned mridangam artiste Thanjavur Upendran, and his great-grandfather was thavil artiste Valangaiman Shanmugasundaram Pillai. Praveen received his initial training under Nellai Balaji and later underwent advanced training under Guruvayur Dorai. He subscribes to the Pudukkottai bani of mridangam playing and considers Palani Subramaniam Pillai as his idol.[1]

Career

Praveen Sparsh is an established mridangam exponent in the field of Carnatic music and performs regularly with artists such as T. M. Krishna, Aruna Sairam, Bombay Jayashree, S. Sowmya, and Sikkil Gurucharan, among others. He has toured extensively across the United States and internationally in Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the Middle East.

He also performs and tours as a co-founding member of the Carnatic Quartet, a multi-instrumental ensemble consisting of Praveen Sparsh (mridangam), Shreya Devnath (violin), Mylai Karthikeyan (nadhaswaram), Gummidipoondi Jeeva (thavil), and Adyar Silambarasan (thavil). The quartet was conceptualized to explore the union of two distinct instrumental art forms within the Carnatic tradition and has been well received by audiences worldwide.[2]

Apart from his work in Carnatic music, Praveen has built a body of work across other musical genres. He has recorded background scores with Academy and Grammy Award–winning composer A. R. Rahman [3] and has composed advertising jingles with filmmaker Rajiv Menon [4]. He has also collaborated and toured with world music and independent bands such as House of Waters, Sid Sriram Live, Sean Roldan and Friends, Aditya Prakash Ensemble, and Poorvaa. Praveen has performed at independent music festivals including NH7 Weekender, Frostbite Festival, Riff Festival, Covelong Surf Festival, DAM Festival, and MAD Festival. He also curated and led a percussion ensemble featuring parai artistes (traditional folk percussion) at the Urur Olcott Music Festival.[5] [6]

Discography

  • Unreserved (2019): An album that places the mridangam in non-traditional settings and combines it with sounds recorded in public spaces, creating a cohesive work in a genre of its own.[7]
