Abubakar Dominic Akpa (born 25 October 1958) is a Nigerian professor of Plant Pathology and former Special Adviser on Agriculture to the then governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, from 2012 - 2016.[1][2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Abubakar was born on 25 October 1958 in Okenyi, Kogi State.[citation needed] He attended Government Secondary School, Dekina obtaining the Cambridge Higher School Certificate (Advanced Level), 1976. Thereafter, in 1977 he proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria earning a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Agriculture with First Class Honours in 1981. He served as a corps member under the National Youth Service Corps NYSC Scheme in Bayelsa State from 1981-1982 and upon completion, was offered employment as Graduate Assistant at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He completed a Master of Science programme in Crop Protection at the Ahmadu Bello University from 1983-1985. Abubakar then proceeded to the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine now Imperial College London, England, UK on a fully funded Commonwealth Scholarship, for a Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Pathology which he obtained in 1988. His PhD thesis is titled: Host parasite interaction in bacterial blight of pea caused by Pseudomonas syringae v.pisi. He returned to Nigeria to continue in his academic work at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1988 and rose through the ranks to become a professor of Plant Pathology and Bacteriology in the university in 2003. He is a recognized expert in issues related to agriculture in Nigeria, food policy, bacteriology, higher education, and crop management. He also has several publications on bacterial blight and bacterial spot crop disease and agricultural management practices in local and international journals. He has served in various capacities including as a member of the team set up by the World Bank, Association of African Universities (AAU) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) for supervision missions to the ten African Centres of Excellence in Nigeria.[4][5][6]
