Project A is a German operational venture capital fund that invests in startups in their early stages. The company is located in Berlin. In early stage financing, Project A often operates as a lead investor, while in stages B and C they mostly act as a junior partner and work with other funds, especially where operative support for startups is needed.[1] Project A was founded in 2012 by Florian Heinemann, Uwe Horstmann, Thies Sander and Christian Weiss, who all had previously worked in the management of Rocket Internet.[2][3] Project A had, in 2012, 40 employees, of whom 20 had previously worked at Rocket Internet.[4] The company's first fund worth EUR 80 million was financed by Otto.de and Axel Springer Digital Ventures.[5]
Project A has taken on investments with partners such as Google Ventures, Accel Partner, Index Ventures, Balderton Capital, Creandum or Lerer Hippeau Ventures.[6] In 2017, Project A closed their second fund with EUR 140 million. Their third fund with EUR 180 million closed in 2019.[5][7] It brought the firm's assets to EUR 440 million. With this budget, Project A backs European founders at Seed and A stages, especially in the fintech, digital health, proptech, Industry 4.0, enterprise software, mobility and logistics industries.[8] Project A has, as of August 2021, 116 employees in Germany.[9]
