Puthiyavan Rasiah is a Sri Lankan-born filmmaker, actor, and film producer known for his contributions to Tamil Cinema. His films explore themes of Tamil identity, diaspora, and resilience, and have been screened at international film festivals.[1][2]
Early Life
Puthiyavan Rasiah was born in northern Sri Lanka. In 1984 while completing his advanced level studies, he was detained by Sri Lankan armed forces during the civil conflict. After spending nearly three years in detention, he sought asylum in the United Kingdom in December 1986. In the UK, he pursued higher education, earning a Master of Arts in Film Studies at the University of West London between 2006 and 2008.[3]
Film Career
Puthiyavan Rasiah made his directorial debut with Mann, released in 2006, a film that explores themes of displacement and societal challenges caused by civil unrest.[4]
In 2014, he directed Yaavum Vasappadum [5], a film that focused on Tamil social issues[6], under his production company, Aaa Productions UK.
In 2019, Otrai Panai Maram (Single Palm Tree), a film that explored Tamil Resilience[7], featured his daughter, Ajathika Puthiyavan, in a leading role.[8][9] It was also produced by his production company and its teaser was launched by Director Pa.Ranjith.[10]
The film received its theatrical release in Tamil Nadu on 25 October 2024.[11] Upon its release, the film garnered mixed reviews.[12][13]

Political Involvement
At the age of 17, Puthiyavan became politically active, supporting Tamil causes during the Sri Lanka Civil Conflict. In 1984, he was arrested and detained without trial for nearly three years. After his release, continued surveillance and harassments forced him to flee to the United Kingdom, where he sought asylum.[3]
Personal life
Puthiyavan married to Anula and the couple has two daughters. His daughter, Ajathika, debuted as an actress in the lead role of Otrai Panai Maram.[17]
