S U Arun Kumar is an Indian film director and writer who works in the Tamil film industry. He is from Paravai near Madurai, Tamil Nadu.[2] He is known for directing the films Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014), Sethupathi (2016) and Sindhubaadh (2019).
Life and Career[edit]
Arun Kumar was brought up in Paravai and moved to Chennai to study Electronics and communication engineering.[3] He then started working in a telecommunications company but quit the job because he did not like it.[4] Kumar subsequently became interested in filmmaking and made a few short films. He joined the second season of Nalaya Iyakunar[5] (a TV competition for short films) to build his portfolio.[3]
Arun Kumar made his feature film directorial debut with Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014) starring Vijay Sethupathi.[6] The film was originally a short film and later made into a feature film,[6] retaining the main characters but with a completely different storyline.[7] Regarding the film, a critic stated that "In a list featuring films that tug at your heart strings, debutant Arun Kumar's Pannaiyarum Padminiyum deserves to be right on the top".[6] It won six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards[8] and was also screened at many international film festivals.[9][10][11][12] Although the film released to positive reviews, it was not successful at the box office.[13]
Arun Kumar later collaborated with Vijay Sethupathi again for Sethupathi (2016) as they both wanted to give a commercial hit together.[14][15] It released to positive reviews and ended up being a commercial success.[13] [14] The film was remade in Telugu as Jayadev with newcomer Ganta Ravi.[16] Arun Kumar joined hands with Vijay Sethupathi for the third time for Sindhubaadh (2019). The actor was cast in the film after 11 other actors could not work in the film due to various reasons.[14] Arun Kumar cast Vijay Sethupathi's son, Surya, in Sindhubaadh although Sethupathi was insistent to cast someone else.[17] Most of the film's footage was shot in Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.[18] Regarding Sindhubaadh, a critic noted that "Sindhubaadh isn’t as satisfying as Arun Kumar’s previous films, but it isn’t entirely a letdown either".[19]
Arun Kumar made a documentary called Imaikka Vizhigal in 2020 about the chain snatching epidemic in Tenkasi.[20] In addition to being its writer and director, he was also the DOP.
Personal life[edit]
Arun Kumar got married to costume designer Deepika in November 2016.[2] The wedding took place in his hometown Paravai.[21] In addition to their long-standing professional friendship,[3] Arun Kumar shares a personal bond with Vijay Sethupathi and his family.[14][22]
