Queer Africa
Queer Africa
Queer Africa is an anthology of eighteen short stories by LGBT writers from different countries in Africa. It was published by MaThoko's Books, an imprint of Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA), in 2013.
The editors, Karen Martin and Makhosazana Xaba decided to include previously published stories, as well as new stories "to provide a space for writers who may not have been able to publish elsewhere."[1]

Reception
Few magazines have reviewed the book. Arja Salafranca, a reviewer for IOL magazine said "I found myself appreciating the vast majority of the stories and hope there may be a follow-up volume in a year or so." She also said that Pinch by Martin Hatchuel stood out the most.[1]
Sequel
The anthology was followed by Queer Africa 2: New Stories.[2] The sequel received more attention from reviewers, including Bibi Burger, a reviewer from the University of Pretoria for TYDSKRIF VIR LETTERKUNDE. She said "From the perspective of literary studies, the stories that are not particularly challenging are still innovative, in the sense that clichéd tropes and narratives associated with both queerness and Africa are challenged. Even just juxtaposing these two supposedly incompatible terms in the title (“queer” and “Africa”) can be considered a queering of dominant oppressive discourses."[3]
The book was announced as a finalist for the 2018 Lambda Literary Award in the LGBTQ category.[4] However, it lost to ¡Cuéntamelo! Oral Histories by LGBT Latino Immigrants.[5]
