RJ Neary, a native of Armstrong, Iowa, moving to Omaha at age ten, is an American politician and businessman. Neary ran to become the 52nd Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, but was defeated by incumbent Jean Stothert in the 2021 mayoral election, receiving 34.75% of the vote.[1] Neary has prior experience in city government, having served as president and chairperson of Investors Realty.[2]
Early life, education and career
RJ Neary was born in Armstrong, Iowa, a small city near the Iowa–Minnesota border.[3] He was one of five children.[4] His parents raised hogs and grew crops on a small farm. Neary moved to Omaha at age 10.[5] In 1975, Neary earned a degree in Agricultural economics from University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Business career
Neary began his career in economics. After graduating from University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Neary worked as a real estate developer and opened his own bar in Omaha, continuing his journey of entrepreneurship.[6]
In 1987, Neary was elected Chairperson of Investors Realty, and he still serves in that role today.[7]

In 2004, Neary was appointed Chairman of the Omaha Planning Board by Mike Fahey.
Political Career
2021
In November 2020, Neary announced his candidacy for Mayor of Omaha.[8] Neary raised $1,057,678 for his campaign, compared to $2,350,249 raised by Jean Stothert in the primary election. Neary received 15.52% of the votes in the primary election on April 6, 2021.[9] In the general election, Neary faced incumbent mayor Jean Stothert on May 11, 2021. Neary raised $784,897 for his campaign, compared to $2,087,173 raised by Jean Stothert during the general election.[10]
In the general election on May 11, 2021, Stothert defeated Neary.[11] Neary conceded the race in a speech that night and on his Twitter account.[12]
