RPI Ambulance (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Ambulance, RPIA) is a collegiate transporting ambulance agency providing emergency medical services to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus and surrounding communities.[1] RPI Ambulance is entirely student-run, and provides both 911 medical services and event standby services.

RPI Ambulance participates in the Rensselaer County, New York emergency mutual aid plan, meaning that the agency can be called to respond to emergencies in surrounding jurisdictions when ambulances are unavailable.

History[edit]

RPI Ambulance was founded in 1976 as Rensselaer Rescue, a club under the RPI Student Union.[2] It started as a group of students providing first-response medical care on foot. In 1980, an ambulance was purchased, allowing the agency to begin providing basic life support transporting ambulance care.[3]

In 1996 the agency held the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation Conference in Troy, NY.[4]

In 2019 the agency was featured on Slack's corporate blog for their custom software integrations with the messaging software. These integrations are used to display emergency dispatch information and help coordinate emergency responses.[2]
