R H Deshpande
R. H. Deshpande was an Indian educationist and Kannada activist associated with the early Kannada cultural movement. He was a founding figure of the Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha, established in Dharwad in 1890 to promote Kannada language and literature.[1]
Education and career
Deshpande obtained a master's degree from Fergusson College in Pune. In 1884, he was recruited into the Education Department of the Bombay Presidency by W. A. Russell.[1]
Deshpande worked in the Bombay Karnataka region, where Kannada was the local language but Marathi was widely used in government schools. He became involved in efforts to promote Kannada in education and public life.[1]
Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha
In 1890, Deshpande led a group of individuals in establishing the Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha in Dharwad.[1]
Deshpande served as the organisation's secretary. The Sangha was established to promote Kannada language and literature and subsequently became associated with the wider Kannada cultural revival and the movement for the unification of Kannada-speaking areas.[1]
The Sangha published Kannada books and journals and organised Kannada classes and literary activities.[1]
Kannada literary movement
The Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha organised a conference of Kannada writers in Dharwad in 1905. In 1915, another conference of Kannada writers was held in Bangalore with the support of the Mysore government. The conference was followed by the establishment of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.[1]
Deshpande was associated with the activities of the Sangha and the wider development of organised Kannada literary and cultural institutions.[1]
Karnataka unification movement
The Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha subsequently became associated with the Karnataka unification movement. Deshpande's work in establishing the organisation formed part of the early institutional development of the movement.[1]
