Rachel Klein is an American theater director and choreographer, best known for Around the World in Eighty Days, The Anthem, and the Grateful Dead musical Red Roses, Green Gold.[1][2][3][4][5]

Career[edit]

Theater[edit]

In 2011, Klein directed and choreographed The Tragedy of Maria Macabre, developed through the Tides Foundation, and starring Abigail Hawk. It was performed at La MaMa, The Kitchen, Dixon Place, and the Wild Project. It was also adapted into a short film co-directed by Klein and Sean Gill.[6][7][8]

In 2012, Klein directed and choreographed Symphony of Shadows at Dixon Place, featuring over 25 dancers, musicians, and circus performers.[9][10][11]

In 2013, Klein directed Around the World in Eighty Days Off-Broadway at the Davenport Theatre (now the AMT Theater).[12][13][14] Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times described the production as a "combination of slick steampunk and cheesy vaudeville, high-tech razzle and low-budget dazzle."[15]

In 2014, Klein directed and choreographed The Anthem Off-Broadway at the Lynn Redgrave Theater. This production featured Jenna Leigh Green, Ashley Kate Adams, Remy Zaken, Jason Gotay, and Randy Jones.[16][17][18]

In 2016, Klein directed and choreographed More Than All the World, a musical adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II by Erik Ransom at Theater for the New City.[19][20]

In 2017, Klein directed and choreographed the Grateful Dead musical Red Roses, Green Gold Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre.[21] The piece featured the music of Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia, with additional music by Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Hunter's longtime collaborator, Greg Anton.[22][23][24] Dead & Company’s Jeff Chimenti served as music supervisor for the production, which was described by Elisabeth Vincentelli of The New York Times as "furthered by Rachel Klein’s bouncy staging... drenched in folk, country and blues, and rendered quite well by the multitasking cast, which plays all the instruments."[25]

In 2021, Klein directed and choreographed the historical musical The Suffragist, at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The musical, starring Nancy Opel, followed the lives and careers of Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, Lucy Burns, and Anna Howard Shaw.[26][27][28][29]

Audio series[edit]

Klein was the director and showrunner of the twelve-episode musical narrative podcast series, The World to Come, which premiered in October 2020. The series featured Broadway actors Marissa Rosen, Justin Sargent, and Lana Gordon.[30][31][32] Later episodes featured the voice of Adrienne Barbeau as "Queen Gehenna."[33][34]

Comedy[edit]

In May 2017, Klein directed the celebrity roast of Michael Musto, which raised money for the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. The roast, hosted by Bruce Vilanch, featured Rosie O'Donnell, Bianca Del Rio, Jinkx Monsoon, Orfeh, Michael Riedel, Randy Rainbow, Crystal Demure, Luann de Lesseps, Judy Gold, and Randy Jones.[35][36][37][38]
