Radio broadcasting in Brazil started its roots on the centennial Independence on the 7th of September, 1922, when the 80 recipients transmitted the speech of ex Brazilian President Epitácio Pessoa and excerpts from the opera O Guarany by Carlos Gomes. In Rio de Janeiro, it was successful that, in the following year, Rádio Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro, the country's first radio station, was first broadcast by using the prefix callsign, PRA 3.

From then, radio stations began to be created through associations to spread culture and education.[1]

There are now 800 radio stations across the country.
