On August 8, 2022, former President of the United States Donald Trump announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had searched his Mar-a-Lago resort and broken open a safe. The search reportedly was focused on material Trump had allegedly brought to the Mar-a-Lago following him leaving the White House; the material also contains alleged classified documents.[1] According to The New York Times, Peter Schorsch, publisher of FloridaPolitics.com, was the first to report on the raid.[2]

Trump was not present during the raid; he was instead at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey.[3]

Background[edit]

Trump's handling of classified documents, including destruction and declassification, has been noted since early into his presidency. Former staff members claim that he would rip, chew, and flush down the toilet presidential records that were to be preserved, some containing top secret intelligence.[4][5] In mid-January 2022, the National Archives and Records Administration, the independent agency of the United States government that preserves government records, discovered that Trump had taken 15 boxes of documents from the White House. These documents contained material that is subject to the Presidential Records Act, an act which requires certain documents to be given to the National Archives. Trump returned the boxes to the National Archives in February, and an investigation by the National Archives found that included in the boxes was "classified national security information". In April, federal officials reportedly began the process of investigating the documents, and had began a grand jury investigation and issued a subpoena to the National Archives, including a search at Mar-a-Lago in the spring.[6][7]

FBI search[edit]

In the morning of August 8, the FBI accessed the property with facilitation from the Secret Service, without notifying the White House. Trump alleged that his safe was broken into.[6]

Reactions[edit]

Trump condemned the raid on social media, saying that "These are dark times for our nation". He compared the raid to Watergate and alleged that it was politically motivated to stop him from running for president in the 2024 United States presidential election.[8][9]

Several Republican politicians, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and conservatives have condemned the raid while several Democratic Party politicians have voiced support for the raid. Some right-wing pundits have argued that the raid could lead to violence and unrest.[8][10][11][12] Trump supporters have gathered outside of Mar-a-Lago carrying signs and flags.[8]
