Raj&Pablo are a British-Asian duo who specialise in the Bollywood genre and are television presenters, broadcasters, entertainers, actors, singers, DJs, event organisers and columnists. The duo consists of Raj Dhanda (born 14 April) and Pavanjit 'Pablo' Sat-Bhambra (born 23 October), from Glasgow and London, UK, respectively. They formed a duo after meeting as actors on Oh This Feeds my Soul, a play written by EastEnders star Nina Wadia, then went to perform together as pop musicians, recording a number of pop songs and Bollywood compilation albums including Love Bollywood.[1]

The duo launched a monthly Bollywood Nights club night in London's Cobden Club,[2] at the time described by The Times as one of London's top 5 club nights.[3] The club night was also hosted at other London venues including the Savoy Hotel.[4]

Following on from a Bollywood-themed month at Selfridges in 2002, they were referred to as "kings of the Bollywood club scene" in the Evening Standard.[5] Reuters called the duo, "the Bollywood IT Boys".[6] and The Economist referenced Raj&Pablo as increasing the international reach of Bollywood beyond its Indian origins[7]

As radio and television presenters, Raj&Pablo are best known for currently hosting The Raj and Pablo Show,[8] previously called Love Bollywood[9] and Film Cafe and The Lunch Show[10] The duo also presented BBC Radio 2's Jai Ho Ho, it's a Bollywood Christmas with Raj&Pablo.[11]

Raj&Pablo have interviewed Bollywood actors including Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar,[12] Imran Khan & Kareena Kapoor,[13] Abhishek Bachchan[14] & Aishwarya Rai,[15] John Abraham[16] and Priyanka Chopra.[17] Following an interview, Shah Rukh Khan tweeted, "Oh world class hectic day... was with Raj & Pablo for BBC... had a great time with all... @iamsrk".[18]

The duo have carried out Red Carpet interviews at international Bollywood events including IIFA Rocks for the International Indian Film Academy Awards[19] and MAMI Mumbai Film Festival[20]

Raj&Pablo released Bollywood Nights,[21] a compilation album of Bollywood music, with BBC Asian Network and EMI in 2010.

The duo also presented BBC Red Button Show in 2010,[22] and a Christmas Special, B4U Best of 2010 Top 20 in December 2010.[23]

Raj&Pablo are both actors have had roles in films including Anubhav Sinha's Tum Bin II[24] in 2017.

Raj&Pablo were announced winners of the Best in Media category at the British Indian Awards in 2014.[25]

Career[edit]

Raj&Pablo were both actors when they met in 1991 for the first time, performing in a play together. They then teamed up as a radio duo and joined BBC Asian Network in 2003 to present Film Cafe and The Lunch Show before moving to the weekend show Love Bollywood[26]

The duo specialise in the Bollywood genre and are involved in a wide range of creative activities from DJing, performing on stage as actors, presenters and interviewers plus behind the scenes as writers, producers, DJs and event organisers.

Acting[edit]

Raj&Pablo met when they were cast by British Actor/Producer Nina Wadia in her play, Oh This Feeds my Soul. Both trained as actors, with Raj co-presenting shows since the 1980s like Rough Guide with Magenta Devine[27] and The Clothes Show with Selina Scott,[28] and Pablo acting in films including Hard Men[29]

Raj&Pablo appeared in the 2002 TV series Goodness Ungracious Me! playing themselves[30]

In 2002, Raj&Pablo appeared alongside Karen David in Theatre Royal Stratford East's adaption of the classic Bollywood movie Baiju Bawra, based on the 1950s Bollywood classic starring Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari, at London's Theatre Royal Stratford East[31] When the theatre production launched, the Evening Standard reported it as a "new battle of Bollywood" between the East London play and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Bombay Dreams as a 'David and Goliath' on the London stage.[32]

The BBC Asian Network signed Raj&Pablo as presenters for Film Café and The Lunch Club in 2003. They then went on to present Love Bollywood,[33] now called the "Raj and Pablo Show".[34]

Since 2000, Raj&Pablo have interviewed many of the best known Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan,[35] Priyanka Chopra[36] and Amitabh Bachchan,[37] on shows such as Raj & Pablo Plays 'Garam Garam Aloo with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Karan Johar on BBC Asian Network[38]

In 2003, Raj&Pablo presented a BBC Radio 2 show to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema, entitled 'The Jewel in the Crown' as a 2-part series. Bollyspice reported, "Bollywood experts Raj & Pablo, transport us to the glamorous world of Indian cinema."[39]

In 2010 Raj&Pablo held interviews as part of the BBC 2's Desi DNA series.[40] and on Christmas Eve 2010, Raj&Pablo hosted Bollywood for BBC1 National Lottery at the Natural History Museum[41]

Raj&Pablo signed to Kuljit Bhamra's Keda Records and released various pop albums in the early 1990s initially under the name Aasha, then under the stage name Raj&Pablo.

In 1996 Raj&Pablo released their album Freedom, under the name Aasha, performing as a pop duo under the Keda Records Pop series. The album is a fusion of Punjabi and British pop-dance music produced by Kuljit Bhamra with songs written by and performed by the duo[42]

Raj&Pablo released their first compilation album, Bollywood Nights, in 2002[43]

Under the name Raj&Pablo, they released pop singles Hindustani Girl[44] with Steel Tiger Records, as writers and performers.

Raj&Pablo recorded a movie soundtrack Bombay Star, which featured in the 2002 movie Bollywood Queen,[45] a cross-cultural romance set in London's East End about a young girl of Indian heritage starring Preeya Kalidas and James McAvoy.

Raj&Pablo released their second Bollywood compilation album Love Bollywood in 2010, and it reached number 1 in the iTunes charts.[46] Raj&Pablo carried out a tour with their Love Bollywood album, performing live at venues including London's Heaven nightclub,[47] with and TV appearances including Bollywood Nights (Nickelodeon) on the Nickelodeon TV network[48]

Raj&Pablo conduct interviews with Bollywood actors on the red carpet and at events in the Bollywood calendar including the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image MAMI Festival,[49] and the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA)[50]

Raj&Pablo have been interviewed for news features about Bollywood events like Priyanka Chopra's wedding for BBC World/News channel[51] and in studio settings through podcasts and interviews in their BBC Asian Network Raj & Pablo show[52]

Raj&Pablo presented the 'BBC Indian Summer on BBC Radio 2' India Season on the BBC World Service[53]

The video clip of 'Kajol's recreation of Gerua while promoting Helicopter Eela' with Raj&Pablo went viral in 2015[54] The clip was inspired by the movie she made with Shah Rukh Khan called Dilwale (2015 film). The Hindustan Times reported, "Gerua, a song from the film, became quite popular... she recreated a funny boomerang video with celebrity show hosts Raj and Pablo."[55]

Raj&Pablo established their Bollywood Nights clubbing night at London's Cobden Club in 1998, the first of its kind in London, where they also DJed, playing, "Bollywood, pop R&B, Arabic, disco and club classics in plush surroundings to packed crowds every month" in a night described by Reuters as a "favourite of those in the know".[83] The Evening Standard called Raj&Pablo "London's kings of the Bollywood club scene"[84] and The Times included it in its list of the best 5 club nights in London[85]

GQ India described Raj&Pablo as the "British-born duo who have helped stoke the excitement of Indians abroad."[86]

The club night has gone on to be held at multiple venues, including London's Savoy Hotel, which Variety called a "jolly Bolly bash at the Savoy",[87] and an ice-skating Bollywood-themed event - Bollywood on Ice with Raj & Pablo - at Somerset House[88]

In 2002, Selfridges dedicated a month to the Bollywood theme, with Raj&Pablo hosting a day in the department store, the Raj&Pablo Day @ Selfridges, with live performances.[89]

Raj&Pablo hosted a panel event at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 on the theme of 'Bollywood as a global phenomenon', described by Digital Spy as an event that would, "discuss the importance of Indian cinema at an international level", under the title, Bollywood: Ready to go Global?[90]

Raj&Pablo are also print journalists, specialising in the genre of Bollywood movies and movie stars, and have featured in news stories like Kajol recreates Dilwale's Gerua and the result is hilarious[91]

The duo launched a charity t-shirt range in 2011 under the 'Bollywood Jollygood' range,[92] supported by Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone[93]
