Raphael E. Cuomo is an American biomedical scientist and Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine.[1] He applies biostatistics and health informatics to the study of risk factors for non-communicable diseases.[2][3]
Early life and education
Cuomo took part in a medical program at Yale University and completed a clinical externship at the Washington Hospital Center's Cardiac Arrhythmia Center.[4] He later obtained a Master in Public Health at San Diego State University and a professional certificate in sustainability science from Harvard University.[5] He completed a PhD in Global Health at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.[6]
Career
Cuomo uses approaches from epidemiology and biostatistics to carry out research on cancer,[7][8][9][10]tobacco control,[11][12][13] and clinical informatics.[14][15][16]Cuomo's research findings have been published in journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association,[17] Clinical Infectious Diseases,[18] the British Medical Journal,[19] Tobacco Control,[20] The Lancet,[21] the Annals of Epidemiology,[22] and Nature.[23]
Cuomo is the author of the book, "Public Health Perceptions of American Youth",[24] which examines public health issues affecting youth in the United States. He is Section Editor for JMIR Infodemiology and Handling Editor for Frontiers in Public Health.[25] For his work in founding the field, Cuomo is considered the Father of Survival Epidemiology.[26]

Cuomo is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health[31] and a member of the Delta Omega honorary society.[32] He is board certified in public health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE).[33] Cuomo has collaborated with Leidos, the Institute for Behavioral and Community Health, and the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.[34]
Personal life
Cuomo lives in San Diego with his wife and their two children.[35] He served as a military officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps from 2018 to 2020.[36]
