Rasha Kashan a Sudanese journalist who works for the BBC. She was born in Oxford and studied in El Obeid and El Qadaarif, she is one of the few Sudanese media professionals who worked for the BBC. She is the only Sudanese in the Arab section of the BBC. Her media career spanned to more than 20 years, she started her career as a journalist at The Lights “Al Adhwaa” Newspaper in Al Khartoum, she was gradually promoted to be the Chief Editor while being blind. She is the second journalist to work for the BBC after Zeinab Badawi, who worked for the English section of the Commission.

Kashan earned a degree in Media from the University of Khartoum as a postgraduate diploma in 1995, and a Bachelor of Journalism and Communication from the Sudan University of Science and Technology in 1995, as well as two Master degrees in Translation and Interpreting and Journalism in 1999 and 2001 from the University of Westminster. Then she moved to Britain and earned postgraduate degrees in Television and Radio Editing and a Master's degree in Translation made her qualified to work in the Arabic section of the BBC in late 2004.

Career[edit]

Kashan has 20 years of experience in the international media, she began working for the BBC in late 2004 as the first Sudanese journalist, she worked her way up as a broadcaster, producer, journalist, reporter, director, senior journalist, and later Chief Editor. She is currently the Director of Development of the Commission, she has been selected by the Commission as one of 30 staff members nominated as Future Leaders.

In 2018, Rasha launched a training scheme for journalists with disabilities from Arab countries, called "AimHigh". The initiative aims to develop the capacity of journalists with disabilities hidden or visible. The six-month scheme offers those involved an opportunity to acquire professional journalism skills with chief editors and trainers at the BBC’s headquarters.
