Raul Rosas Jr. (born October 8, 2004) is a Mexican[4][5][6]-American mixed martial artist who competes in the Bantamweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.[7]

Background[edit]

Rosas was born on October 8, 2004. He was born in Clovis, New Mexico, which has a population of fewer than 40,000.[8][9][10][11] Rosas' parents, Raul Rosas and Oyuki Rios, initially immigrated to the United States from Iztapalapa, a borough in Mexico City.[12][13][14][15] Oyuki is a maid who also works other part-time jobs because she is primarily responsible for caring for Rosas and his brother Jessie, who is a professional fighter, while Raul Sr. works as a boxing instructor. Raul Sr. and Oyuki were aware that their sons had a talent for combat sports and that being raised in the United States would not be sufficient to satisfy their children's desire to become fighters. Jessie and Raul Jr. required better training, something that Clovis was unable to provide.[16][17][18][19]

Rosas, at just 13, moved to Santa Rosa in 2017. He remained disinclined after that. He started wrestling in high school and participated in Pankration, an amateur MMA-like sport. After a few years in Santa Rosa, Rosas' parents made the decision to further their kids' fighting career one more step. As an amateur, and only 14 years old, he participated in the IMMAF world championships in Rome, Italy, where he was able to win gold. The Rosas family relocated to Las Vegas, the "Fight Capital of the World," in late 2021 from California. Rosas established his training at Cobrinha Jiu-Jitsu and 10th Planet Las Vegas, and at the same time, he started competing professionally in the Ultimate Warrior Challenge in Tijuana, Mexico.[16][18][20] Raul was homeschooled.[21][22]

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Early career[edit]

In November 2021, Rosas made his professional debut for the Mexican promotion Ultimate Warrior Challenge Mexico.[23]

After going 5-0 in UWC Mexico, Rosas was invited to appear on Dana White's Contender Series 55 on September 20, 2022 against Mando Gutierrez, where he won the bout via unanimous decision and became the youngest fighter to be given a UFC contract.[24][4][25][26] He broke the record, previously held by Chase Hooper.[27][28][29]

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]

Rosas made his UFC debut against Jay Perrin on December 10, 2022 at UFC 282.[30][31] He won the fight via a rear-naked choke submission in the first round, for which he received the Performance of the Night award.[32][33] Rosas is the youngest fighter in the history of the promotion.[34]

Rosas faced Christian Rodriguez on April 8, 2023 at UFC 287.[35][36] He lost the bout via unanimous decision.[37][38][39]

Following his loss, Rosas was spotted in a photo, with a bunch of Kyrgyzstani youth.[40] Later on, it was revealed that he was in the Kyrgyzstan for a month-long wrestling camp under the guidance of his old Russian coach.[41] Rosas was booked to fight against Terrence Mitchell on the main card of Noche UFC on September 16, 2023.[42] He won the fight by technical knockout in round one.[43]
