ReVanced is an open-source software patcher that is currently in active development. It modifies third-party applications for Android, such as YouTube, adding features, such as a built-in ad blocker, sponsor blocker, download capability, background play, picture-in-picture, a fully-black theme, swipe control for brightness and volume, and the ability to restore dislike counts on YouTube videos.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] It is also able to patch other apps, such as Twitter, TikTok and Reddit.

The name ReVanced originates from the word advanced but with ad removed, in reference to the software's ad blocking features.[8] And the prefix 're' represents the continuation or rebirth of YouTube Vanced, whose shutdown triggered the creation of ReVanced.

    History and development

The development of ReVanced started after the YouTube Vanced project received a cease and desist letter from Google in March 2022 and stopped operating. The stated reasons why Vanced was shut down were because, as a modified YouTube app, it contained and distributed Google's proprietary code.[9] ReVanced, on the other hand, contains no proprietary code and acts by modifying the official copy of the app that the user already has. ReVanced doesn't provide any modified apk. You have to patch supported apps using ReVanced Manager or CLI.

    Mode of operation

In order to make ReVanced work, the user needs a compatible version[lower-alpha 3] of the stock YouTube app installed on their phone, as well as two other Android applications:

Once the Manager is started, it will disassemble the YouTube installation package, apply the modifications selected by the user, and then create a new modified .apk installation file.

    Features

    • Removed general ads and video player ads. With SponsorBlock API, the app skips sponsorship segments in YT videos.
    • Use different package name for Non-Root version.
    • You can log in to Google Account on ReVanced using MicroG.
    • Minimized and background playback.
    • Volume and brightness swipe controls.
    • Shorts button on the navigation bar is hidden.
    • Tablet mini player layout.
    • Creator's watermarks hide settings.
    • Old quality flyout menu.
    • Remember Video Quality
    • Disables playing YouTube Shorts when launching YouTube.
