"Recharged" is a 2022–2024 American two-part comic book crossover event mainly written by Melissa Flores and published by Boom! Studios through its Power Rangers comic line, being based on the Power Rangers franchise by Haim Saban and Hasbro.[1]

The first part debuted in October 2022, while the second part titled "Darkest Hour" debuted in August 2023 in order to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the original television series, which concluded with the Once & Always film and the Cosmic Fury season.[2]

Publication history

In March 2022, Boom! Studios announced a new storyline titled "Recharged", with former Director of Power Rangers Development and Production Melissa Flores (as writer) and recurring artist Simona Di Gianfelce serving as the new creative team of the relaunched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, starting with issue #101 in October 2022.[1]

Flores said, "Being able to write Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a literal dream come true, and I can't stop pinching myself. The coming issues will feature a wild ride that will aim to honor the incredible history of this iconic series, and push the Rangers to their absolute limits."[1]

Di Gianfelice added, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is one of the comic book series I've always wanted to illustrate! So full of action and emotion. I'm really excited to start this new adventure with all of you so pick up a copy of issue #101 and prepare to be amazed!"[1]

Editor Allyson Gronowitz also said, "With a brand new recharged era and a brand new creative team to launch it, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are back bigger and more Morphinominal than ever before. We're so grateful to all the loyal fans and readers for being an integral part of the 100-issue journey thus far. Just wait until you see what's in store for the Rangers as they reunite to face some of the biggest threats in the universe... and beyond!"[1]

Additionally, two one-shot issues titled Power Rangers Unlimited: The Coinless and Power Rangers Unlimited: Hyperforce are set to be released in June 2023; both issues feature the return of characters from previous comic events, and the cast from the Power Rangers Hyperforce web series.[3][4]

The second part titled "Darkest Hour" debuted on August 23, 2023 in order to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the original television series.[2][5]

Aditionally, a one-shot titled Power Rangers Unlimited: The Morphin Masters is set to be released on January 2023.[6]

Plot

Part 1

Following their fight against the Death Ranger, as well as the departure of Jason,[upper-alpha 1] the Power Rangers are training in a Promethea facility. Zordon remembers the night she locked Rita Repulsa up, but not before she cast a spell that made him go through his current state. When the Moon becomes visible again, Zordon sends the Rangers to investigate after receiving a distress signal from Lord Zedd. By the time they arrived, they find out Rita Repulsa has returned.[7]

Tommy, Kimberly and Matthew fight Rita (now renamed as "Mistress Vile"), who is assisted by Finster, Squatt and a mysterious person called "The Vessel". In the meantime, the other Rangers rescue Zedd, Goldar and Baboo, but Mathew decides to stay behind, giving the team enough time to escape to Earth. Back in the Command Center, Zedd reveals that Mistress Vile has obtained the Zeo Crystal from him.[8]

While being treated in the Command Center, Zedd speaks with Zordon about how his previous plan to make the Moon invisible failed after Vile invaded the castle to take the Zeo Crystal. Kimberly is upset about Matthew's sacrifice, while Aisha sadly admits her feelings for him. Meanwhile, Vile keeps Matthew prisoner while sends a monster to Angel Grove. When the monster proves to be almost invincible due to the Zeo Crystal's effect, Kimberly has no choice but to summon her Zord in order to destroy it. Despite it worked, it also worries Tommy, causing a rift between them. Grace Sterling deduces the signal of Matthew's Morpher is no longer on the Moon. At the same time, Billy receives a signal from the Red Omegazord on the planet Casestine. Kimberly, Aisha, Rocky and Adam go there and find Alpha-1, who survived his previous encounter.[upper-alpha 2][9]

Back in the castle, Vile explains to Matthew about how she was locked up by Zedd until she was freed by Divatox, who was hired by Gamma Vile, Rita's estranged father. Gamma was obsessed with using a vessel to bring Dark Specter out of his prison. He travelled to the planet Infernus in order to use Alpha-1 as the vessel, but Rita decided to turn against her father. After defeating him, Rita made a deal with Dark Specter, promising to find both the Zeo Crystal and a vessel for him. She became Mistress Vile, with Alpha-1 joining him in finding the Vessel on the planet Bizerk.[10]

Back on Casestine, the Rangers confront Alpha-1, who was sent by Vile in order to find an ancient Morphin Grid navigator, hidden in the ruins of the planet's Master Arch.[upper-alpha 3] Trini reveals that Zack and Kevor were captured by Putties at the time, but Adam, Aisha and Rocky helped them to escape to the Spectrum II. In the Command Center, Zedd awakens from his state and confronts Zordon before being taken to his cell. Alpha-1 reports to Vile that when he merged with the Red Omegazord, he found the Omega Rangers' location.[11]

Back in Safehaven's Eternity Point, Xi reveals more about the Morphin Grid and how Dark Specter plans to enter Earth's dimension. At the same time, Grace reveals that Promethea found ruins on Earth that belonged to the Morphin Masters. The Omega Rangers then battle Alpha-1, who found their location in Safehaven, Tommy visits Jason in his new house, and Grace confronts Zedd in his cell until he frees himself through the use of his own Morpher.[12]

Zedd reveals he planted a device in the Commander Center to steal Zordon's power and become the Z Ranger.[upper-alpha 4] He attempts to kill Grace when Vile and the Vessel arrive for the Navigator. Zedd confronts the Vessel, while Vile finds Grace and Terona with the Navigator. In Ernie's Juice Bar, Tommy and Jason are having a match when Vile's monsters are invading, with a brainwashed Matthew on their side. He reveals that Finster locked the communicators in to prevent them from getting help from Safehaven, and tries to kill Tommy and Billy, but Kimber and Aisha intervene on time. In Safehaven, XI disassembles Alpha-1 for interrogation, and the latter reveals details about Vile's plans to free Dark Specter. Unaware to anyone, Lord Drakkon frees Kiya from her prison,[upper-alpha 5] asking her to join him.[13]

During Vile's invasion of the Command Center, the Vessel confronts Zordon. He reveals to be his own undead body that was infused with dark magic to bring back Dark Specter. The Vessel traps Zordon into his own memories, since the first Rangers on Earth, to the Emissaries unjustly vanishing him from the Morphin Grid.[upper-alpha 6] The Vessel intends Zordon to fuse with him, gaining his body back. In spite of it, Zordon refuses and admits his wrongs, but still has faith in his new Rangers. He causes the Vessel to have "a soul" of his own, freeing him from Vile's control.[14]

In Safehaven, Drakkon and Kiya escape to the Coinless' world through the Master Arch before armies of spaceships arrive. In the Commander Center, Vile takes Grace hostage only to be confronted by Zedd until the Vessel interferes, leaving Terona enough time to escape with the Navigator. Around Angel Grove, the Power Rangers fight Matthew and break the Sword of Darkness, but Matthew, fully under Vile's spell, escapes after being defeated.[15]

After escaping through the Master Arch,[15] Drakkon and Kiya find out his world was already invaded by Dark Specter, turning most of the Sentries into his soldiers. They are saved by Ranger Slayer and Scorpina and brought under Drakkon's Tower, where Finster 5 and Bulk reside. While Bulk kept a transformed Zack Taylor within, Finster 5 is working to develop a machine to share Morphin Energy. But to get more Power Coins, they all must go to the top floor, where Jason Scott remains. With the remaining Coins put in the machine, the Drakkon Rangers are formed. But Zack escaped from his prison, opening the bunker's entrance. As a result, Slayer was left behind, leaving the other Rangers no choice but to fight Dark Specter.[16]

In an alternate timeline, the Hyperforce Rangers did not succeed against the Alliance. Instead, Chloe Ashford sided with her father, Doctor Z. Some time later, she was captured by Jack Thomas, who reveals the rest of the team is missing. After regrouping, they pretend to be prisoners taken by Doctor Z, who reveals he sided with Mistress Vile in order to get his wife (Chloe' mother) back. The Hyperforce Rangers retreat and travel to the Animarium, where most of the Wild Force Rangers were brainwashed by the Death Ranger, except for Taylor Earhardt.[17]

Back in Safehaven, the Omega Rangers confront Vile's armies, which include Dayne and the Death Ranger, only to receive help from Lord Zedd piloting Serpentera. On Earth, Vile uses Grace to find the location of the Navigator in the Bermuda Triangle, where she uses the Zeo Crystal to cast a spell that infects the Morphin Grid with dark magic. When the Power Rangers arrived, they find Grace being killed by Matthew.[18]

Part 2: "Darkest Hour"

In the Bermuda Triangle, there is a tense fight between the Power Rangers and Matthew, following Grace's death that infuriates Billy, with the Drakkon Rangers joining the fight.[16] When Mistress Vile completes the spell, the Vessel is possessed by Dark Specter in order to enter Earth's dimension.[19]
