The Redding Colt 45s are a collegiate summer wood bat baseball team based in Redding, California. They are currently an independent team and play their home games at historic Tiger Field in Redding.

History[edit]

The Colt 45s were founded in 2004 by Anderson native Denny Brugman and began play in 2005 as a collegiate wood bat summer team. They were named after the Major League Baseball team now known as the Houston Astros. The team has boasted to having more than 30 players join Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball and independent baseball teams over the years.[1] Since they were founded in 2004, the organization has solidly promoted a great family-friendly atmosphere and it has served the community in many ways over the years. [2] [3] They are members of the Redding Chamber of Commerce. [4]

The team's general manager is Rick Bosetti, a Redding native and former MLB outfielder. Bosetti also served as mayor of the City of Redding and at one time coached the Simpson University baseball team. Former Shasta College and Eastern New Mexico University standout Berek Fasking serves as the team's head coach and Bill Plummer serves as assistant coach. Plummer is a former MLB catcher who won a World Series ring with the Cincinnati Reds and was once manager of the Seattle Mariners and the professional version of the Chico Heat from 1997 to 1999.

West Coast League Tri-State (through 2010)[edit]

The Colt 45s began play as members of the West Coast League's Tri-State affiliation. It is unknown when they started, but they competed through the 2010 season.

Far West League & Horizon Air Summer Series (2011-2013)[edit]

They played in two different from 2011 through 2013, the Far West League[5] and Horizon Air Summer Series[6] (hosted by the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox, later to be known as the Montna Farms Summer Series).

Independent (2014-present)[edit]

The Colt 45s became an independent team in 2014 and is not affiliated with any notable collegiate wood bat leagues like the West Coast League. They currently play 40-game seasons, mostly at Tiger Field, and rarely play on the road.

2020-2021: COVID-19 Pandemic Hiatus[edit]

The team did not play for the 2020 or 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but announced that they would return to action in 2022 and beyond.[7] [8]

The passing of Danny Brugman[edit]

In September 2016, Colt 45s founder/majority owner Danny Brugman had succumbed to effects of a stroke and a 10-day coma. He was 42. [9] Brugman served as a coach under Rick Bosetti early on in the 45s' history while also running the day-to-day operations.
