Reduce is a rock band formed in 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal. The band faced difficulties in finding members but eventually became a three-piece band, with Austin Woods on drums, Pedro Lourence on vocals and guitars and Miguel Carrera on bass guitar until 2020, following Austin's departure, replaced by drummer Salvador Vale. The group was formed by Austin Woods and Pedro Lourence in summer 2017, when the members were 14 and 13 years of age, respectively.[1] Reduce is known for having a vast mix of genres that are normally not associated with each other. The band conquered more than 400,000 thousand impressions worldwide, as of July 2019, prior to the band's debut album release Brain Freeze, Reduce achieved the one thousand subscribers milestone in only the first year of activity. [2]
Although formed in 2017, the band only first practiced live in late 2018 due to members’ personal circumstances and lack of time.
History
Background
In the summer of 2017, Lourence and Woods were considering creating a band, and had previously played together covers of other known songs. [3] In the following weeks, they started seeking a drummer, or eventually a bass player. Before Woods becoming the band's drummer, he previously had played as a lead guitarist. Pedro Lourence firstly started uploading song covers on YouTube of mainstream bands intended to reach a bigger audience.
Brain Freeze [4] includes 9 tracks, besides those, "Steer" was the first ever released single by the band. It was first meant to be released on December 2018, but it was later pushed back due to the lack of equipment and experience. Steer was then officially released on April 13, 2019 on all digital platforms, following the release of the second single 'White Gun', on May 12, and then the entire album on May 30, 2019.
Before releasing any music to the public, Reduce started by uploading music related videos to their YouTube channel. These include fan-made videoclips, other band's full albums (or EP's), and even live band performances.
Demo recordings and beginnings (2017–2019)
Throughout 2017, much of the band's early development was retrospectively attributed to late-evening, early-night sessions between Reeves, Reeves' friends and Woods. Back in the day, they would practice and hang out with a couple of friends or write riffs and lyrics at Woods' house after school. Most inspiration for the band's debut album Brain Freeze comes from this very first cycle. The band changed from name to name before sticking with 'Brain Freeze'. After being fully established by September 2018, as of December 2018 the band secretly released a compilation demo album named Rotten Silence [6] that, as far as is known, is only available on Bandcamp. The mix-tape was released on 21 December 2018, as a standard 15-track CD. The 15-track standard version focuses on the music provided by Reeves’ personal recordings as well as Reduce live performances, lost riffs, demo songs, and covers.
Reduce went through severe line-up changes, in addition to being unable to find a drummer at first. The band sought members in various places and before being set as they currently are until this very present day, Reeves was initially meant to play the bass guitar, Carrera the drums and Austin Woods guitars. The group had a hard time deciding on what to rely on, but eventually came to a consensus.
Brain Freeze and brief hiatus (2018–2020)
After the bass and guitar player (whose names cannot be revealed for privacy reasons) left the band in March 2018, Miguel Carrera was brought in to play the bass guitar, and by July 2018, David Reeves had set on his personal notes and journals what it would be the band's debut album, scheduled to release in 2019. Reeves went through many ideas for band albums (these include Phobos, Morning Rise and The Fallen Spring Of The Darkest Days), initially meant to also add covers to their debut (for example "Been A Son" by Nirvana). Initially it was never meant to be taken as "anything serious" and it would be a low-produced recording, only to be released on Bandcamp, but Reduce was later brought to record label DistroKid. By April 2019, prior to Brain Freeze’s release, Reduce came up with its first videoclip, for the single "Steer".
The band officially announced in August 2019, that had settled for an undetermined time on a hiatus.
Musical style, influences, and lyrical themes
Reduce is considered to be an alternative metal [7] band, along with hard rock influences. The band describes its sound as a "sloppy mix between metal and indie rock" and their sound varies very much from song to song but typically relies on a heavily down-tuned guitar setup, lo-fi music style and non-studio produced. Reduce's lyrics are generally very aggressive; they sometimes include profanity while exploring themes such as anxiety, nihilism, depression, and psychosis. The band has continually experimented with its sound, most notably varying from sludge metal tracks led by heavily distortion toned guitars to melodic singing and acoustic guitars sound that first appeared on Rotten Silence. Reduce's influences include underground bands (The Violet Stones and Wallows) or most commonly known, mainstream bands such as Slipknot, Silverchair or Nirvana.
