Reem Almee is the first Arabic female journalist to enter the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba in April 2002. Since she succeeded in persuading the detention camp officials to arrange for her to visit the island, she became the first female journalist representing an Arabic journal to visit the detention camp.[1] In the detention camp, she conducted several personal interviews with the detention camp officials and took pictures inside the place. However, she was not allowed to get near the prisoners.
In August 2013, she published her first book “A Kuwaiti Woman in Guantanamo” with Madarek Publishing House.[2] Mohammad Al Khalid Al Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior celebrated the book release and he praised her success in overcoming obstacles through her adventure which was full of dangers.[3]
In her first book, she summoned Ahmed Al-Rubei to be one of the symbols who witnessed the condition of prisons in the Arab world, then she talked about her relationship with New York and Ghazi Al Gosaibi with London when he left it.[4] She had already covered in New York all sessions of the United Nations General Assembly from 2002 until 2006 and she interviewed a number of Arab and foreign leaders and officials.[5] She recorded the details and events of that period in her book "A Kuwaiti Woman in New York" which was published in 2018.[6]
Reem is a Kuwaiti journalist with her own way of writing and she has been dealing with journalistic news and field investigation since her beginnings in the nineties of the last century in Kuwaiti newspapers and magazines. She writes in a graceful Arabic language and a cynical sense in which female journalists are rarely able to excel compared to their male counterparts [7]. Since 1999, She was also a founding member of Kuwaiti Women of the Twenty-First Century Association whose contribution has been clear in establishing women's political rights.[8]
