Reetu Abdus Sattar (Bengali: রীতু আব্দুস সাত্তার[1]) is a Bangladeshi performance artist, filmmaker, director, and actress.[2] Her works primarily ranges from theater, video, photography, and text. Her works focus on the exploration of thematic and collective memories, loss, personal objectives, and missing histories.[3][4] Her performances and artistic works are exhibited in numerous national and international exhibitions and festivals, including in Rotterdam, Sydney, Liverpool, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong, Paris, Singapore, etc.[4][5][6] Her 2019 short film Harano Sur/Lost Tune was screened in several international film festivals and art galleries including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Liverpool Biennial, NTU CCA Singapore, among others.[7][8][9][10] Her 2022 film Shabnam has been selected by several art museums, galleries, and film festivals, including the 2023 IFFR.[11][12]

Early life and career[edit]

Reetu Sattar was born in 1981. Born and raised in Dhaka, she began performative artistry works at an early age. She made her TV debut by starring in a season 3 episode of Locked Up Abroad. Her latter roles in acting include The Last Thakur,[13] Bishaas, Meherjaan,[14] Runway, Kali: A Superhero Series, Kaler Putul.[citation needed]

She produces performative documentaries and films. Some of her films include 1134 - Numbers Not Lives (2014, performance), A Bird of Stone (2014, performance), Rising of the Days (2016, performance), Melting (2016, performance), Isn't It Time You Let Me Go? (2016, performance), Harano Sur/Lost Tune (2019, short), Shabnam (2023).[4] Reetu is a member of the Britto Arts Trust.[4] She currently resides in Dhaka Bangladesh. Her works have been presented at numerous national and international art exhibitions, museums, and film festivals. Some of them include International Film Festival Rotterdam, Dhaka Art Summit, Istanbul Biennial, Liverpool Biennial, British textile Biennial as well as venues including the British Film Institute, London; Alserkal Avenue, Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai; Artspace, Sydney; Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and NTU CCA Singapore. etc.[15] Her performance installation programmed in Spring 2020 was presented at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.[16]

Harano Sur (Lost Tune)[edit]

Her 2019 film Harano Sur was commissioned by the Liverpool Biennial and Dhaka Art Summit,[17] as part of the New North and South. The film was focused on a traditional Bangladeshi musical instrument called the harmonium.[18][19] The film captured a performance that took place at Dhaka Art Summit.[3] The film was screened at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam.[20]

Shabnam[edit]

Her 2022 film Shabnam is about the "historic and continuing relationship between East Lancashire and Bangladesh in a textile tug-of-war."[21] The film is co-presented by Lancashire Encounters and the British Textile Biennial.[22] The has been an official selection at the 2023 Rotterdam film fest.[23][24][25]
