"Remembrance" is the series premiere of American streaming television series Star Trek: Picard. The episode was written by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, Alex Kurtzman and James Duff. It was directed by Hanelle M. Culpepper and released on January 23, 2020 on CBS All Access. It stars Patrick Stewart as retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in the year 2399.[1]
Plot[edit]
The episode begins with Picard playing poker with Data, until he wakes up and realizes it was all just a dream, and Picard is just on Chateau Picard with his dog, Number One. Meanwhile, in Boston, Dahj and her boyfriend come home only to be attacked. Dahj's boyfriend is killed, but the attack only trigger some sort of fight mode in her and she takes out all the attackers. Then, after "flashing on Picard's face",[2] she goes to find him in France.
When Dahj shows up at the Chateau to meet Picard, she claims that she knows she'll be safe with him. When the two are attacked by what are revealed to be Romulan assassins, Dahj sacrifices herself for Picard and disintegrate when she throws herself in front of a ray gun aimed at Picard.
Picard, saddened, meets with Agnes Jurati at the Daystrom Intitute. Picard finds an old painting created by Data and depicting Dahj entitled "Daughter." Jurati explains that Dahj is an android, and that Data may have created her—and one other android called synthetics, or "synths".
Meanwhile, Soji Asha, Dahj's sister who is identical to Dahj, is working on a Borg Cube out in deep space.
Production[edit]
Development[edit]
In March 2019, Star Trek: Discovery director Hanelle M. Culpepper was revealed to be directing the episode (as well as the following one)[3] and later show creator Akiva Goldsman was set as one of the episode's writers.[4] Most of "Remembrace" takes place on Jean-Luc Picard's vineyard, Château Picard, differing the episode from many other Star Trek adventures. TrekMovie.com called the series "new kind of Star Trek show".[5]
Release[edit]
The episode was released on January 23, 2020, on the American streaming service CBS All Access.[5] "Remembrance" was also released in other countries alongside its release in the United States on the English channel CTV Sci-Fi and on the French channel Z.[6] In June 2020, the episode was made available for free streaming on CBS.com, StarTrek.com, and PlutoTV for a limited one week time period as part of an event hosted by CBS All Access called #StarTrekUnited and in October 2020, the episode was released along with the rest of the first season on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Limited Edition Steelbook.[7]
Reception[edit]
Den of Geek called the episode "refreshing" in that the central character was an old man, even though Picard actor Patrick Stewart has starred in the show's prequel series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, as the same character.[8] TrekNews.net noted how the show "being different is a good thing."[9] Websites IGN and TrekCore also liked the episode, with IGN saying that there is "enough whiz-bang martial arts and phaser fire to keep adrenaline junkies happy."[10][11]
