"Welcome to Your Life" is the first episode of the first season of the American mystery television series The Hardy Boys.[1] Written by Steve Cochrane and directed by Jason Stone, "Welcome to Your Life" premiered on December 4, 2020, on Hulu, along with the rest of the series.[2]
The episode follows young Frank and Joe Hardy, who lose their mother and must move to the fictional town of Bridgeport with their father, Fenton Hardy, who is investigating a case their mother might be connected to.[3][4]
Plot[edit]
After a fishing boat is raided and a lockbox containing a radioactive Egyptian idol is stolen, a mysterious man kills the captain and crew of the boat, with only a sailor named Ern surviving. Fenton, Joe and Frank Hardy's father, and Sam, Fenton's partner, begin working undercover as police officers at a construction site. They catch a corrupt city inspector sneaking money. Meanwhile, Joe and Frank's mother notices that she's being followed on her way to Frank's baseball game.
After winning the game, Joe and Frank are met by a police officer who informs them that their mother is dead. After the funeral, Frank's grandmother, Gloria Estabrook, gives him a music box with a secret compartment at the bottom. Fenton arrives at the house when the kids are mourning their mother, and tells them that they will be moving to Bridgeport for the Summer with him. Though outraged, Joe and Frank agree, and Frank says goodbye to his girlfriend. The group moves in with their Aunt Trudy, who immediately sends them out to fetch something for her.
They meet a girl who takes them to a diner and tells them her name is Biff, short for Elizabeth. She and Joe kindle a friendship and Frank is recognized by another girl who knows Gloria. Ern arrives at a welcome party and informs Gloria of the disaster, but accidentally scares the woman away. Joe meets with Frank, and they make up from their past fight. Then, the brothers spy on their father, who is being confronted by a strange woman, who says that her nephew said something to Laura that was the reason she died.
Production[edit]
The main characters, Frank and Joe Hardy, and portrayed by Rohan Campbell and Alexander Elliot, respectively in the episode. Other guest stars include Janet Porter as Laura Hardy (the brothers' mother who dies near the middle of the episode. It is later revealed that Laura was uncovering a mystery, and once she dug deep enough she was killed. Porter appears as Hardy through flashbacks in the rest of the season), Stephen R. Hart as The Tall Man (a large creepy man who seems to have ulterior motives) and Alexandra Beaton as Emma (Frank's girlfriend who he must leave behind to move to Bridgeport after Laura dies.[5] "Welcome to Your Life" was written by series developer Steve Cochrane and directed executive producer Jason Stone. The episode was released on December 4, 2020.
Reception[edit]
"Welcome to Your Life" was received with mixed reviews from the critics. A review on The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio gave the episode 2.5 stars out of five, saying that the plot was contrived, the running time was too long, and the characters were underdeveloped. In addition, they thought that Laura's death in the first episode was a too cliched and overused plot point, and the Hardy brothers' age difference makes them unrelatable. The reviewer said that the episode "feels padded" and "doesn't a lot for [him]."[6] The first season of the show got 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 85%.[7][8]
