"Su'Kal" is the eleventh episode of the third season of the American science fiction television series Star Trek: Discovery. The original title for the episode was "The Citadel" until it was changed by the producers.

"Su'Kal" was released on December 24, 2020 on CBS All Access, alongside an episode of the aftershow The Ready Room.

Plot[edit]

Discovery detects a life sign on the starship in the radioactive Verubin Nebula, and Saru suggests this could be the child of one of the starship's scientists. They jump there to investigate, and find a planet made primarily of dilithium inside the nebula. Saru, Burnham, and Culber transport to the planet, leaving Tilly in command of Discovery. On the planet, the away team find themselves inside a complex holographic simulation designed by the scientists to raise and protect the child. They find the child, Su'Kal, and discover that he was born with biology adapted to the planet and radioactive nebula, while the away team suffers from radiation poisoning.

Su'Kal is not prepared to deal with reality outside the simulation, and when he becomes upset he creates an energy surge similar to the Burn. An Emerald Chain ship commanded by Osyraa arrives. Book flies into the nebula to retrieve the away team. He gets Burnham, but the others, plus a stowaway Adira, stay with Su'Kal. Osyraa captures Discovery and makes it jump to Federation headquarters.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

In October 2020, prior to the premiere of the third season of Star Trek: Discovery, the episode titles for the season were revealed on Radio Times. The title, originally believed to be "The Citadel", was changed by the producers to "Su'Kal", along with the titles of the penultimate and last episodes.[2]

Casting[edit]

The episode stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Saru, Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets, David Ajala as Cleveland Booker, and Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber. It is the first episode in the season not to feature Michelle Yeoh in a recurring capacity as Philippa Georgiou, after the character was written out of the series in the previous episode, "Terra Firma". Also in the episode, actor Bill Irwin portrays the character of Su'Kal.[3]

Release[edit]

"Su'Kal" was released on CBS All Access, before it was rebranded and expanded to Paramount+ in March 2021,[4] on December 24, 2020.[5] Bell Media broadcast the episodes in Canada on the specialty channels CTV Sci-Fi Channel (English) and Z (French) on the same day as the U.S., before streaming the episodes on Crave. Netflix has streaming rights for the series in another 188 countries, and released each episode for streaming within 24 hours of its U.S. debut.[6]

Reception[edit]

Aftershow[edit]

An episode following the plot and production of the episode of the aftershow The Ready Room was released simultaneously with "Su'Kal" on December 24, 2020. Special guests on the show, hosted by Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Wil Wheaton, included Doug Jones, who appeared as the Kelpiens Saru and Su'Kal in the episode, as well as Janet Kidder, who portrayed the alien Osyraa, an antagonist.
