Removaly is a US-based personal data removal company. It provides software and services to help individuals and businesses remove instances of personal information from public information broker and people search websites. It operates on a freemium model, where scanning tools and data security resources are provided without charge, but also offers paid subscriptions and professional services.

The company was founded in 2020 by software developer and entrepreneur Kyle Krzeski and digital marketer and SEO specialist John Bourscheid.[citation needed] Their main goal was to ensure control over how much of their and their family’s private data was freely available online.[citation needed]

History[edit]

The concept for Removaly began in late 2019 after co-founders Kyle Krzeski and John Bourscheid experienced their own issues with online harassment and cybersecurity. Removaly was incorporated in the state of Virginia on February 28th, 2020. The company was self-funded by Krzeski and Bourscheid with no outside investment.[1]

Removaly officially announced its launch on July 9, 2021.[2] On August 6, 2021, the company launched on Product Hunt to widespread acclaim, earning Product of the Day.[3] The listing was hunted and submitted by Krzeski and former AngelList advisor Kevin William David.

Per co-founder Bourscheid in a March 2022 interview with Cybernews, "Removaly is the only service on the Internet scanning every day to ensure all personal information stays removed."[4]

Awards and Accolades[edit]

In addition to Product of the Day, Removaly was selected from over 13,800 nominations as a finalist in Product Hunt's 2021 Golden Kitty Awards in the Privacy category.[5]

In February 2022, the company won HackerNoon's 2021 Startup of the Year for Blacksburg, Virginia, receiving over 90% of the total vote.[6]

Philanthropy[edit]

In late 2021, Removaly began an annual donation in support of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.[7][8]

In early 2022, Removaly joined the 1% Pledge, promising to donate a percentage of their profits to charitable foundations in the digital privacy space.[9]

In June 2022, the company pledged to offer free data removal services to the family members of those killed in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas.[10]

Hate Raid Response[edit]

The company gained early recognition with their protection of many Twitch (service) streamers dealing with hate raids and was featured on several protection resources, including Hate Raid Response, for personal security purposes.[11] They have also assisted extensively with mitigation of swatting and other retaliatory actions taken against marginalized streamers.
