The Renthlei are one of the minor clans (Awzia) of the Mizo people of Mizoram, northeastern India.[1][2] The Renthlei are subdivided into sub-clans including Lianhlun, Zachhing, Thangthawl, Tinkulh, Chhingthlang, Sawhnel, Thundurh, and Chhonkhel, among others.[2] According to Mizo oral tradition, the Renthlei lived in a large village known as Minpui, situated to the southwest of Selesih, one of the important early Mizo settlement sites in the Lushai Hills.[2]
As one of the eleven minor clans collectively known as Awzia, the Renthlei fell under the political authority of the dominant Sailo chiefs during the pre-colonial and colonial periods.[3] Like other minor clans, the Renthlei have adopted the common Mizo language (Duhlian) as their primary language while maintaining their distinct clan identity and sub-clan structure.[1][4]
