Etymology[edit]

Historians state the surname is a distorted form of Gaur, which originates from Sanskrit (गौड़ ), meaning "Bull" according to the Brāhmaṇa.<ref>For definition of ब्राह्मण brāhmaṇa, with last syllable showing a Vedic accent, used as a noun as "m. (having to do with Brahman or divine knowledge), one learned in the Veda, theologian, priest.

Gaur, are Brahmins residents of North- India, are the sub- caste of Brahmin.

Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal, are the place, where most of the Hindu Gaur Brahmin have their habitat, but they are originally from Afghanistan.

British sources described the Gaur as "immigrants from the GAUR PRADESH of AFGHANISTAN".

Gaur Brahims are One Of the Prominent Community Among The Brahmins. Historically they have originated from a small village of Afghanistan the name of that village is GAUR Pradesh after the Muslims invaded Afghanistan in 9th century the brahmins moved to the Northern INDIA. Mainly in Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal, Punjab, Delhi, & Rajasthan.

Gaur Brahmins were given land and houses by North INDIAN kings to settle down based on their knowledge on spirituality and VEDA.

Gaur or गौड़ means bull in ancient times to make a pressure on the kings of india. Bramhins make his own organization and give the name “GAUR” which means bull .

We already know that kshatriya’s always represent his sign as lion so bramhins make his sign bull because In ancient times people think that only bull can fight with a lion.
