Republic is a U.S. website that lets investors to invest in startups. Founded in 2016,[1] the platform features vetted startups raising venture capital, allowing users to invest into companies on the private market through equity crowdfunding.

Republic’s model was enabled after the passing of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (or JOBS Act) in 2012.[2]

History[edit]

Republic[edit]

Republic was founded in 2016 after receiving funding and support from AngelList.[3] The company launched their first Crowd SAFE campaign the same year, crowdfunding several companies at first after vetting them through compliant due diligence processes. Over 150 companies have since been funded on the Republic platform,[4] with 35% of investments going to female founders, 43% to immigrant founders, and 25% to minority founders. [5]

In 2019, Republic worked with rapper and entrepreneur Chamillionaire to launch a competition that would help fund a minority-founded startup.[6]

Relationship with AngelList[edit]

Republic is often misattributed as a subsidiary of AngelList. AngelList was Republic's first major investor, and many AngelList employees went on to work at Republic. Both companies operate separately from one another[7]
