A rescue inhaler, also called “quick-relief” inhaler, is a type of inhaler that dispenses bronchodilator medication to help expand a person’s airways and thus relieve the symptoms of an asthma attack or worsening chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.[1] [2] [3]
Bronchodilators may be classified as short-acting and long-acting. A rescue inhaler uses a short-acting bronchodilator.[2]
Albuterol and levalbuterol are the most common rescue medications used for acute asthma attacks.[4][3]
