2013 council campaign[edit]

His campaign ran on a platform or debt reduction and systematic renewal[7]

Macpherson's campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, with him receiving 4,856 votes, which was 5,289 votes lower than than the top polling candidate Merepeka Raukawa-Tait.[8]

2016 mayoralty campaign[edit]

Macpherson's campaign began in 2015 via his Ratepayer group erecting yellow signs around Rotorua[9] The signs were later deemed to be illegal[10]. In early 2016 he launched his bid for Mayor.

During the campaign, Macpherson faced a defamation claim after he made a post on his offical candidate Facebook page alleging "cronyism", saying two named council staff were part of Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick's 2013 election campaign team and were subsequently offered jobs by the mayor despite not going through the proper recruitment processes.[11] Macpherson later apologised[12] for posting false and defamatory statements about the council employees.

Macpherson's campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, with him receiving 6,127 votes to Mayoral Election winner Steve Chadwick's 8,990.

After the final election results were announced, Macpherson launched a petition to have the election results declared void[13] due to the alleged bias of Rotorua Lakes Council chief executive Geoff Williams where the results of an annual council satisfaction report were not released until after the election. Before his petition was heard in the district court, he again faced the threat of defamation[14] after comments made in press statement were seen as defamatory. After one day in court, Macpherson withdrew his petition for the election results to be declared void.[15] It was later revealed, after an Offical Information Act request that the Rotorua Lakes Council had paid $63,487.48 for legal advice to defend the petition in court.[16]. Despite public calls for Macpherson to repay the money to ratepayers, he has yet to do so.
