Sandra Hazlehurst is a New Zealand politician who has served as the Mayor of Hastings since November 2017. She first stood for council in 2010.[1] Hazlehurst is the first female mayor of Hastings.
Political career
Sandra Hazlehurst assumed office as the Mayor of Hastings on 24 November 2017, following the 2017 by-election after her predecessor, Lawrence Yule, resigned to become the MP for Tukituki. She became the first female mayor of the district.[2]
Hazlehurst was Mayor of Hastings through the recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle, overseeing infrastructure rebuild and housing buy-outs.[3]
Under Hazlehurst's council, the Hastings district saw a significant 77% decline in the number of people in emergency housing.[4]
A public rift emerged between Hazlehurst and senior councillor Damon Harvey in late 2023, after Harvey acknowledged the existence of a document related to the council's handling of consenting issues. Harvey was subsequently stripped of his committee chair position by Hazlehurst.[5]
