Rhythm Unplugged is currently West Africa's longest running music concert hosted by Flytime Promotions in Nigeria[1][2][3]. The concert celebrates Nigerian and upcoming African artists in the Music industry. The event has been running for fifteen years. Kicking off in 2004, the event has since hosted some of the biggest artists in Nigeria and continued in its style of unveiling new and exposing old artists in Nigeria to performing live to large individual and corporate audiences. An example of which would be the popular opening and unveiling of celebrities such as Wizkid, Olamide, Davido, Tiwa Savage and acts like Seyi Shay in the 2011 Lagos edition of the concert.[4][5]
History[edit]
The Rhythm Unplugged concert started in 2004 with Cecil Hammond and his company Flytime Promotions. The purpose of the event focused on promoting the Nigerian musicians and comedians at a time when the Nigerian music industry was just beginning to make more connections to the international Music scene.[6][7][8][9]
Early years[edit]
Rhythm Unplugged started in 2004 at a small venue in Ikoyi, Lagos at a location called Fantasyland. The first concert sold over 4000 seats. Its success at the time can be associated with the use of a new strategy which included bringing out 30 major entertainers to perform all in one night.[10][11]
The concert is acclaimed for introducing the concept of having two official hosts compere an event together on stage in Nigeria as opposed to one host which was the usual practice at the time. This brought about the duo concept of Julius Agwu and Okey Bakassi, who served as the hosts for Flytime Promotions events for the first few years.[12][13]
Origin[edit]
Due to the success of the first edition, the concert organizers decided to continue the event and increase their venue capacity to accommodate their growing fan-base that they had built over the years.
