Ribble Cycles is a UK based Direct to consumer (DTC) bike brand and manufacturer. It is one of the longest established bicycle manufacturers in the world.[1]
History
In 1897, Thomas Geldeard founded Ribble Cycles. The company was developed into a complete family business in 1913. The family continued working on it throughout the 20th century and made hand-crafted steel frames.
Ribble Cycles’ name comes from originally being located in the Ribble Valley, and the first shop was alongside the River Ribble.
In 1949, the ownership was passed to a second family from Preston. They continued working on it and developed a business of handcrafting steel frames. In 1985, the business passed into the hands of the Dove family, where Ribble Cycles established its mail order business.[2]
In 2001, Ribble sponsored the Ribble Pro Vision cycling team for the entirety of the then-Premier Calendar series.
In 2015, True Capital invested in the company and subsequently fully acquired the business two years later. In 2017, under new ownership, with fresh investment and a new leadership team, Andy Smallwood joined as CEO.
In 2018, Pro Team sponsorship returned for Ribble with Ribble Pro Cycling.[3] Joe Skipper won the Ironman tournament held in Bolton, UK. He was sponsored by Ribble Cycles.[4] In 2018, Ribble launched Endurance SLe which at the time was the lightest production electric road bike in the world.[5] The bike they presented won the award eBike of the year.[6]
