Richard Swalin (1929 – January 9, 2015) was an American metallurgist, academic, and author. He published extensive analyses concerning thermodynamics.[1]
Biography
Swalin was born in 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He obtained a BS from the University of Minnesota in metallurgical and electrical engineering in 1951, and subsequently a PhD in 1954. He initiated his career in academia via assistant professorship in the same academy. In 1963, he became Head of the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering—later, he served as an associate dean, prior to ascending to the position of dean itself in 1971.[2][3]
He experienced a hiatus amid his extensive career in academia from 1977 to 1984, during which he served as Vice President of Technology for Eltra; eventually, research was appended to his purview. Upon the conclusion of this stint, he returned to academia, assuming a different position—Dean of the School of Mines—at a different university: the University of Arizona.[2][3]
He died in Boise, Idaho, on January 9, 2015.
