Richthofen
GenresNeue Deutsche Härte

Richthofen was a German Neue Deutsche Härte industrial metal band founded in 1997 by producer and guitarist Andy Classen. The bands name references the prominent German air ace Manfred von Richthofen (1892–1918), also known as the "Red Baron".

The band published two albums with the major label Sony Music via it's subsidy GUN-Records. The first record appeared in 1997 was named Seelenwalzer a word play on soul and waltz. The German word "Walzer" refers to the dance but contains the word "Walze" meaning steamroller. The album sold more than 20.000 units. Subsequently three singles and an official music video for the song "Blut der Pferde" were published. In 1998 Richthofen toured Germany as support with Dimmu Borgir and Kreator.

In 1999 the second album titled Helden der Zeit was published and entered the German top 100 charts on position 88.[1]

After protests by the Richthofen family the band was legally required to drop the name and ultimately disbanded without publishing another fully recorded album tentatively titled Mondo Bizarre. This album was heavily inspired by the Jim Jarmusch movie Dead Man and made extensive references to country music. GUN-Records objected to this stylistic choices and this album remains unpublished.

In June 2019 the original Seelenwalzer album is being reissued with the label Massacre Records. Here the band-name has been changed to the title of the original album Seelenwalzer. Together with members of the original Richthofen line-up Andy Classen has founded a new band under this name and recorded an album named Totgeglaubt - german for "believed dead". Seelenwalzer's Totgeglaubt is being published with Massacre Records in June 2019.[2] The songs Meeresblut and Gott ist Tod have been released as singles in April and May 2019.
