Refuge Brioschi is a refuge in the mountain of Lake Como above Lierna Lake Como, in Borgo Pasturo at 2,410 m[1] on the summit of the Northern Grigna, in the Lombard Pre-Alps.[2]
Story[edit]
The refuge, owned by the CAI of Milan, was inaugurated on 10 October 1895 with the name of Capanna Grigna Vetta on a project by the engineer Giannino Ferrini. On the Italian side of the Alps, it was the second hut opened on the summit after the Capanna-observatory Regina Margherita begun in 1890 by the Italian Alpine Club of Turin on the Gnifetti tip of Monte Rosa at an altitude 4550.[3]
In 1926, following an expansion largely financed by Luigi Brioschi, it changed its name to the Luigi Brioschi refuge. In 1944, during the World War II, it was burned down and destroyed and rebuilt in 1948.
On 9 September 1950 a cross was erected by the FALC section of Balsamo.
Features and information[edit]
The refuge has 36 beds and has an adjoining winter room. For those wishing to climb in two stages when the refuge is closed, they can use the Riva-Girani bivouac, located at the Comolli huts along the winter route.
Logins[edit]
There are numerous access routes to the refuge and the practicable ones vary according to the season. In winter with good snow conditions, climb from the southern slope starting from the Balisio pass along path 31+33, passing by the Pialeral refuge, the Riva-Girani bivouac at the Comolli huts and then tackling the so-called " Muro del Pianto", a vertical drop of 600m that climbs up to the crest. Once at the top, faithfully following the poles, you will arrive at the refuge in about twenty minutes.
In summer there are two alternatives: always from the southern slope there is the classic summer path which starts just below the Comolli huts and reaches the mouth of the low where the Merlini bivouac stands, from there on it is sufficient to follow the well-marked track for reach the top.
From the north side, instead, take the "via della Ganda", along path number 25 which starts from Cainallo and passes by rifugio Bogani; even in winter it is possible to follow this path but it is necessary to inquire about the snow conditions and pay close attention to the sinkholes scattered along the path. Access from path 25 is relatively easy, except for the last 100 m of difference in height where there are chains to overcome some steep sections.
Crossings[edit]
There are many crossings that can be made from the Brioschi refuge as a starting point; the most famous is the Traversata Alta which allows you to reach the summit of the Grigna Meridionale passing through a valley called Buco di Grigna, to then climb up on the southern slope of the Grignetta.
