Robert Mark Carpenter (born June 5, 1985), better known as Dr. Rob, is an American public intellectual, UCLA faculty member, author, novelist, personal and professional development trainer, and filmmaker. He holds a doctorate from The University of Southern California.[1]
Early life and education
Carpenter was born on June 5, 1985, in Southern California, the youngest of two children. He has an older sister, Harvard-educated Dr. Candice Danielle Carpenter. He graduated from Pomona Senior High School in 3 years, where he played basketball, ran cross country and track and field, and was a member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.
Carpenter earned multiple full academic scholarships to attend The University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Los Angeles, and elsewhere, but ultimately decided to attend a small private liberal arts school, Claremont McKenna College. He graduated in 2006 with a B.A. in government and later went on to earn an M.A. from Northwestern University in 2014 and a doctorate from The University of Southern California in 2019.[2]
Career
Carpenter is known as a "Renaissance Man," having written personal development books and led personal development workshops, directed films, taught in academia, served on a variety of public sector and civic boards and commissions, and written scripts and novels. He is author of the nonfiction books *The 48 Laws of Happiness*, *Red Carpet Manuscript*, and *Icons & Legends*, as well as academic pieces for the Harvard Public Health Review and Oxford Business Review.[3] He has directed the film project "2 Grandpas, 1 Baby," as well as worked with multiple Hollywood studios and networks. He is represented by Good Life Management. Academically, Carpenter has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, Syracuse University in LA, and California State University, Los Angeles. He has spoken before hundreds of audiences, including South by Southwest EDU, TEDx Cities 2.0, and Harvard University's Chan School of Public Health, presenting on a range of leadership, mental health, and creative storytelling topics.
Personal life
In 2022, Carpenter married Elizabeth Ann Rulon in a private ceremony in San Diego, California.
