McGee is a native of Erie, Pennsylvania. [6] Raised as a Catholic is what McGee credits for his "rentless drive." [7]

One of his PhDs was awarded by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He defended his PhD dissertation in International Economics there at 4pm on June 30, 1993, which was the last day Hungary offered a Soviet-style PhD.
