The Rock House Fire was a fire burning in Jeff Davis and Presidio counties, Texas. It is one of the largest fires ever recorded in Texas, the worst disaster to strike Jeff Davis county in modern times[2], and was the largest fire of the 2011 Texas wildfire season. The fire was possibly ignited by bad electrical problems in an abandoned house near Marfa. [1]

Impact[edit]

A total of 174 animals were killed by the fire, especially cattle, and 41 homes were destroyed near Fort Davis.[1] The place smelled like trash in a campfire, according to Bob Dillard, and hundreds of other structures have been threatened, including MacDonald Observatory. [3][4] The place was already suffering from drought at the time, making conditions for the fire even worse.[5] Jeff Davis county was reported to have burned nearly 149,600 acres (60,541 ha) of land, causing the county to be put in a state of emergency, and lot of the Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch has been burned by the fire.
