Rogelio Andaverde

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Rogelio Andaverde (born 1979) was an American criminal who staged a kidnapping to go out with his friends.

He set up a plan with his friends that they would "kidnap" him so that he would not have to deal with his wife's backlash if he told her that he would go out partying. He was charged with making a false report to police and spent 19 days in jail and was issued a $5,000 bond.

Staged kidnapping

On October 4, 2012, at about 10:30 p.m., 34-year-old Rogelio Andaverde was kidnapped by two masked men after they broke into his household and then into his bedroom where he and his wife were lying on their bed in Edinburg, Texas and then holding him at gunpoint as he was taken out of his home and into their van.[1][2][3] Andaverde's wife, having witnessed the ordeal, immediately called the local authorities to report what happened. A search was held for Andaverde, including a Department of public safety helicopter and a dozen deputies.[1] Authorities called the search off several hours later, growing suspicious of the event, for which they had no leads.[1][4] Sheriff Treviño says "something wasn't right. The victim was an ordinary guy with no criminal record."[5]

On the morning of October 6, 2012, two days after the event, Andaverde had returned home, telling his wife that the kidnappers let him go after they took pity on him.[1][3]

Deputies took Andaverde into custody and interrogated him about the kidnapping for more than five hours to try to find out about the kidnappers' identities,[6] but instead learned that he staged the entire kidnapping so that he "could get out of the house and go party with friends."[7] He admitted that he was planning to go out drinking with his friends but was afraid of how his wife would react, ultimately causing him to stage a kidnapping so she would not know about it and so he would not have to deal with her reaction.[4][6][3] He was charged with a false report to police, which is a Class B misdemeanor, and spent 19 days in jail.[1][8] Andaverde was sent to Hidalgo County Jail where a judge issued him a $5,000 bond.[9]
