Ron Cross MBE (8 June 1920 – 20 January 2021)[1] was a veteran of the Normandy landings. He was also a keen cricketer and a well-known local umpire.[1][2]

Cross was born in Portsmouth and had four siblings. He was married with two children. He was an opening batsman for Gosport Cricket Club. After he stopped playing in 1960, he continued his involvement as a coach, fixture secretary and umpire.[1] In 2012, Cross was registered as a blind person.[2] He died on 20 January 2021 at the Tudor Lodge Nursing Home in Fareham.[3]

In August 1940, Cross joined the Royal Engineers. He was part of the 79th Armoured Division, one of the first to land on Juno Beach during the Normandy landings. In 1946, he left the British Army and then worked at the Royal Hospital Haslar for 37 years, initially as a woodwork instructor and later as an occupational therapist, for which he was honoured with the MBE in 1980.[1][3] In 2016, he was awarded Legion d’Honneur for his bravery.[4]
