Ahmed Mohammed Al-Salem (Arabic: أحمد بن محمد السالم; born 20 June 1958) is a Saudi diplomat who is the former Saudi Vice Minister of Interior.[1] He previously served as the Deputy of the Ministry of the Interior, and was also the Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers for three consecutive terms.[2] Currently work as a Visiting Professor in both King Saud University and Prince Sultan University, and a board member of the Saudi Economic Association.[3]
Education[edit]
He holds a doctorate in economics in 1987 from (University of California, Riverside), a master's degree in economics in 1983 from the same university and a bachelor's degree in economics in 1981 from the same university, as well.
Experiences[edit]
- Economist in the World Bank in field of Development Economics (1989).
- Part-time Assistant Professor in Institute of Diplomatic Studies affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1987 - 1988).
- Adviser at the Bureau of Presidency of Council of Ministers in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1987 to mid of 1992).
- On 5/1/1992, He was elected as Secretary-General for Arab Interior Ministers Council.
- He was reelected for position of Secretary-General for another three years, as of 1/6/1995.
- He was reelected for the third time for position of Secretary-General for period of three years as of 1/6/1998.
- He has many contributions to the local and regional press.
- Publishing many economic researches and studies.
- Participated in many regional and international meetings, including the annual Crans Montana Forum.
- Deputy of the Ministry of Interior in the Excellent Position under the Royal Order issued on 9/4/1422 H (2001).
- The services were extended as Deputy of the Ministry of Interior for period of four years as of 9/4/1426 H (2005).
- The services were extended as Deputy of the Ministry of Interior for period of four years as of 9/4/1430 H (April 2009).
- Adviser in Ministry of Interior in position of a Minister dated 22/9/1430 (September 2009) and commissioning to work as Deputy of Ministry of Interior.
- The services were extended on 22/9/1434 H (2013) in position equal to position of the Minister for period of four years, the commissioning as Deputy of Ministry of Interior continued.

Diplomatic career[edit]
The Arab Interior Ministers Council[edit]
During Al-Salem's tenure as Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers; He held more than 180 Arab security conferences and meetings under the umbrella of the council. He participated in about 30 Arab ministerial meetings under the umbrella of the League of Arab States, as well as preparing for the joint meeting of Arab interior and justice ministers, which was held in 1998 within the framework of the League of Arab States - the first of its kind - in which 44 ministers unanimously agreed and signed on the Arab Convention against Terrorism. The Council completed the counter-terrorism procedures during his tenure as Secretary-General, where it approved the Code of Conduct for Combating Terrorism for Member States, the Arab Strategy for Combating Terrorism and the Arab Convention on Combating Terrorism. He participated in many high-level meetings held by some regional and international organizations, such as: the United Nations Assembly and Interpol.
Also, during Al-Salem's tenure as Secretary-General of the council, the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers was inaugurated in 2001 in the Tunisian capital, in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Saudi Ministry of Interior[edit]
He was responsible for preparing for approximately 20 meetings of Their Highnesses, the Emirs of the Regions (Governors of the 13 regions of Saudi Arabia), headed by His Highness the Minister of Interior at that time, Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. He participated in the meetings of His Highness the Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz with his counterparts in Arab and foreign countries, as well as in his meetings with a number of world leaders. He also chaired several meetings of deputies of the regional provinces.[5]
