Ronald Stoyan (* 1972 in Dresden) is a German astronomer, author, and publisher.
Stoyan has gained international reputation as a visual observer of planets and deep-sky objects. In 1994, he spearheaded the reestablishment of the "Visual Deep-Sky Observation" section of the nationwide astronomy association "Vereinigung der Sternfreunde" and served as its first chair until 1999.[1]
In 1999, on his initiative, the first German Deep Sky Conference took place—an annual event that brought together visual observers and astrophotographers.[2] Stoyan is a co-discoverer of the planetary nebula LieSto 1, found in 2023 in an image by Bernhard Liebscher of the constellation Cygnus, near the Veil Nebula.[3]
In his books, articles, lectures, and television appearances, Stoyan seeks to encourage people to observe astronomical phenomena. [4] In 1994, Stoyan founded the magazine "interstellarum" together with Jürgen Lamprecht and Klaus Veit as an interdisciplinary medium for amateur astronomers engaged in visual and photographic deep-sky astronomy. He served as managing editor-in-chief of the journal from 1994 to 2015 and as publisher of its successor, "Abenteuer Astronomie", from 2016 until its discontinuation in 2018. From 2011 to 2014, he was the producer of the video magazine “interstellarum Sternstunde”.
Stoyan is the founder and managing director of Oculum Publishing, a publishing house specializing in astronomical literature, and is the author of numerous books. [5] Stoyan has made a name for himself particularly as a celestial cartographer and selenographer. His interstellarum Deep Sky Atlas was the world’s first star atlas to catalog deep-sky objects according to their actual visibility through amateur telescopes. With the “Reiseatlas Mond” and the Duplex Moon Atlas, he created innovative, practical atlases of the Moon designed for practical use.
Stoyan has brought numerous book projects to fruition through crowdfunding. With a total amount raised of over 500,000 euros, he is considered one of the most successful crowdfunders in the German-language print sector.[6] Stoyan has appeared as a speaker at astronomy events throughout the world such as the North East Astronomy Forum (NEAF) and also regularly serves as an astronomy expert aboard cruise ships.
